Facts about log houses

Why should we use wood to build our houses?

It seems like the trend is to use concrete to build our houses because of all the myths about a log house, ie that it decays easily, it’s dangerous in terms of fire safety and it causes loss of energy around the house. However, one forgets that concrete has high energy usage and low recycled materials usage and concrete is not re-usable. Therefore, an environmental friendly house should ideally be built with wood instead of concrete.

Wood is a natural and ecologically compatible building material and it is durable with environmental benefits. By building your house with wood, you are maintaining a comfortable microclimate inside the house as the walls of a log house are able to ‘breathe’. It also takes shorter time and costs less to build a log house as opposed to a concrete house.

The phrase of ‘log houses’ are often misconstrued as a wooden cabin in the forest. The term actually refers to the method of construction rather than the style of the house. A log house nowadays is anything but a small, dark and rusty cabin in the forest, it can be both a modern or rustic design house which is built with logs instead of concrete and it can be in the forest, on a beach or even on a street.

Furthermore, a log house is much safer in natural disaster situation like earthquake as log houses are more flexible compared to a concrete house. As for decay and rot, Visillatalot manufactures their log houses using only the slow growing top quality Finnish pinetree which is a strong and long-lasting building material. The wood of the pinetree contains tars, essences and tanning agents which are phytocides, therefore protecting the structures from decay, fungus and mold and hence providing a healthy climate in the house. Due to its protective features, professional drying and correct utilization, the structures are less liable to deform or crack in conditions when humidity and temperature changes.

Many studies have been conducted with the results showing that log houses performs well under fire by charring while maintaining its structure and the charring provides insulation to the remainder of the log and therefore slows the rate at which flames will spread along the wall. For more information about fire security in a log house, please refer to our webpage here.

Visillatalot’s wood is taken from carefully grown pine trees growing in the north of Finland which possesses unique features. We do not use untested materials or materials which can harm a human health in the house. Glues used in the glued structures adhere to the strict European regulations and standards.

Our philosophy is to provide our customer with a top quality house and all you need is the key to the house and it’s a ready to live-in condition from the moment the construction of the house is completed and you step into the house.
